Private Residence Cambridge, Massachusetts
We were asked to design an addition to this prominent home in the Brattle Street Historic District. Located on a corner lot, this house faces the stately Longfellow House across Brattle Street and also fronts a side street with smaller homes. We developed a design that in both volume and detail assists the transition from the scale of Brattle Street to the domestic context of the adjacent side street.
The renovation and addition includes a large, modern kitchen looking out over the secluded back yard, as well as a new Master Suite, study, and guest bedroom. Critical to this project's success was its approval by the Cambridge Historic Commission in one hearing and with no conditions. © 2003 Handlin, Garrahan, Zachos and Associates
